Four hour standoff on St. Philips Street Thursday ends peacefully

54-year-old Payson resident will not face criminal charges

After a four hour standoff with Payson Police Thursday, April 21 on St. Philips Street, a 54-year-old Payson man was taken into custody on a mental health hold, but is not facing any criminal charges.
Payson Police Chief Don Engler said no weapons were found in a travel trailer behind the house at 404 South St. Philips Street, but officers did not know the man was not armed until they were able to conduct a search of the travel trailer.
Engler said Payson Police received a call from a Rim Guidance counselor at 1:49 p.m. Thursday alerting them to a possible suicide attempt. The subject reportedly said he had a weapon and was going to shoot himself.
Engler said the man was intoxicated and was uncooperative and negotiators with the department's Special Response Team could not talk him into giving himself up.
"Eventually he opened the door just enough and they used a taser on him," Engler said. "He was taken in on a mental health hold, which is normally for 72 hours, and is not facing criminal charges. We're just trying to get him some help. He had some recent medical issues - other than that he didn't give us a lot of information."
Engler said the man was not injured by the taser, but it caused him to hesitate long enough for officers to take him into custody.
