At their regular meeting Wednesday night, the Payson Town Council had the first reading of an agenda item that could bring big bucks to the Rim Country, a toll booth at the southern entrance of Payson just north of the Mazatzal Casino that could effect tourism to all of Northern Arizona.
The resolution states that visitors traveling through Payson on the Beeline Highway be charged adversely according to age, with children under 15 charged $10 each, those 16 to 21, $5 each, ages 21 to 70, $2.50 and those 70 and older, $1.
Payson Mayor Kenny Evans suggested that Arizona State University officials have a free Gold Pass into Payson, but be charged $10 each to exit the town.
Councilmember Ed Blair suggested Democrats be allowed in free and councilmember Su Connell said that only those who could spell "Mogollon" be allowed in free.
Members of the Citizens Awareness Committee invited Evans, Blair and Connell to their next meeting to have them explain what this would mean for Payson.
Arizona Department of Transportation officials, contacted later for comment on the resolution, said they would be happy to man the booth for free. . . . . . . . . . .April Fool!
