Osama bin Laden is dead

President Barack Obama: "Justice has been done."

At 11:30 p.m. EST President Barack Obama announced to the American people and the world on all television major news channels that al-Queda leader Osama bin Laden was killed today, Sunday, May 1, in a U.S. operation with the cooperation of the Pakistani government.
He was with family members in a mansion some 60 miles outside Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, when he was killed along with three others in the compound during a 40-minute firefight. The U.S. took custody of his body.  No U.S. troops were killed in the operation.
It took months for the U.S. to piece together the information received in August of bin Laden's whereabouts. Just days ago, President Obama gave the order for the attack which was carried out Sunday, reportedly by an assault team of Navy Seals flown to the area by helicopter.
According to Aljazeera's news coorespondent Qais Azimy, Afghan officials confirmed that bin Laden had died and that his body was in the custody of the United States.
President Obama told key members of Congress and world leaders of the death of bin Laden before he addressed the American people. But the word had gone out. Outside the White House, people had gathered and were cheering and singing the Star Spangled Banner, waving American flags.
Besides September 11, Washington had also linked the 54-year-old  bin Laden  to a string of attacks -- including the 1998 bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and the 2000 bombing of the warship USS Cole in Yemen.
Late Sunday night crowds had gathered at "Ground Zero" in New York City, the site of the September 11 attack on America that killed some 3,000 people.
"Justice has been done."
