Warning: Fire danger is ever present-don't start fires and leave them burning

Deputies Arrest Man for Doney Park Brush Fire

On May 11, 2011 at Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies were notified of a wildland/brush fire off of Mary’s Drive in Doney Park. Personnel from Summit Fire Department responded as well and discovered the fire burning on approximately a half acre of private land.
While firefighters extinguished the fire, which was fanned by high winds in the area at the time, deputies began interviewing neighbors about the cause of the fire. Deputies contacted one subject, identified as Juan Williams, 28, who admitted to starting a fire on his property to burn off collecting tumbleweeds. Williams indicated that after starting the fire he walked back into his residence to take a shower leaving the burning material unattended. When Williams came back outside he discovered his neighbors’ property on fire and called 9-1-1.
Summit Fire controlled the fire to half an acre and stayed on scene until all hot spots were cold and out. It was discovered that Williams had not contacted the local fire station to obtain a burn permit or information regarding current burning conditions. Williams was arrested for reckless burning and booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Summit Fire Department would like to remind all residents that fire danger is ever present in the area even with the recent precipitation. Any residents with in Summit Fire Departments area are required to contact their local fire station to obtain a burn permit and current fire conditions. As always never leave a fire unattended, always have the ability to extinguish what is being burned and drown all coals with water until they are completely cold.
