Busy Weekend for Coconino County
Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit
Flagstaff AZ- On Friday, June 10, at about 9 p.m. the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office was advised of a search for a missing 13 year-old male in Paria Canyon . The search was initiated by the Kane County, Utah Sheriff's Office as the missing boy was with a Boy Scout group that began their hike at the White House Trail Head in Utah . It was believed the missing boy attempted to reach several members of his troop that were hiking to the confluence of Buckskin Canyon and Paria Canyon but missed them and continued down Paria Canyon eventually entering Arizona .
A Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Coordinator worked with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Kane County Search and Rescue Unit. Medical Transport and Air Rescue helicopters from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, and Classic Helicopters from Page conducted aerial searches. At 11:15 p.m. crew members aboard the Classic Lifeguard helicopter spotted a distress signal from a campfire about three miles down canyon from the Arizona Border. Classic Lifeguard landed near the camp and located the missing child. The child who was in good health and did not require medical attention was then flown to the staging area in Utah to be reunited with his group.
On Saturday evening the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received a request for assistance from the Flagstaff Police Department regarding a lost male hiker. Flagstaff Police Officers believed the man was hiking between Lake Elaine and Little America . Deputies and Search and Rescue Volunteers initiated a search with the assistance of the Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Rescue helicopter based in Kingman. A Sheriff’s Commander spoke to the lost hiker via his cell phone and was able to direct members of the helicopter crew to his location. The hiker was located west of Fisher Point in good condition and did not require medical assessment or treatment.
While the search near Fisher Point was occurring two other Search and Rescue incidents were reported, one on Humphreys Peak and one on Mt. Elden. Both of the missions were quickly resolved by Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies and Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel.
