ADOT officers bench commercial vehicle with 24 violations
Enforcement part of ADOT’s public safety role

PHOENIX – After a day of conducting vehicle inspections in Northern Arizona, a team of Arizona Department of Transportation enforcement officers took one final truck off the road – a rolling danger with more than 20 violations.

ADOT enforcement officers had just completed a special enforcement detail in Payson when they noticed a semi truck and trailer pass by their location which appeared to be extremely overloaded with garbage and a wrecked vehicle. The commercial vehicle was located and an extensive Level 1 inspection was conducted, which determined it was unsafe for the road with 24 identified vehicle and driver violations. Eight of the violations included various frame cracks and brake inadequacies which provided the basis for the decision by the officers for the vehicle to be placed out of service.

Other violations included the vehicle being overweight on the tandem axle by 3,850 pounds, over height by 15.4 inches, over width by more than nine feet, a blown trailer tire, defective brakes, improper securing of the load and several cracks in the frame. The cargo consisted of scrap metal, a chopped trailer, and a Ford F150 pickup.

Driver Jeff Reynolds, owner/operator, received citations and was found responsible for all violations by the Payson Municipal Court. He was fined $2,200. The trailer was towed from the scene and moved to a location in the Phoenix area.

This is just one example of the many commercial vehicle inspections conducted by ADOT Enforcement and Compliance Division officers which results in unsafe trucks being identified and placed out of service. This type enforcement action protects the motoring public by taking unsafe commercial vehicles off state highways.
