Doctors hope to re-attach San Tan Valley boy's fingers

Power mower accident severs three fingers - deputies  find fingers and put them on ice

A San Tan Valley teenage boy was injured Thursday afternoon after he stuck his hand under the deck of a running lawn mower and severed several fingers.

Pinal County Sheriff's Office dispatch received the initial 911 call around 4:15 p.m. from a neighbor who claimed the boy jumped over a backyard fence asking for help after he cut off three fingers at a home located along the 2200 block of W Hayden Peak Drive.

When PCSO deputies arrived on scene, the lawn mower was still running and would not turn off using the kill switch. A deputy had to physically disconnect a wire connecting the spark plug to the engine in order to turn the mower off.

The boy’s fingers were located and immediately put on ice. The teen has been flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where surgeons will attempt to re-attach the fingers.

The boy was conscious, alert and breathing normally through the entire ordeal despite being home alone at the time. There is no information on why the boy reached under the deck of the running mower. His parents were notified and are en-route to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
