Mother busted for aggravated DUI with sleeping child in car

Delfina Gaitan, 35 of Florence

35-year-old Florence woman stopped for driving erratically registers a BAC almost three times the legal limit

At about 12:20 a.m. Thursday, August 4 an off duty Casa Grande police officer noticed a white Nissan Sentra driving erratically eastbound on Judd Rd from Attaway Rd. The officer immediately contacted PCSO dispatch to report the reckless driver.

An officer with PCSO DUI taskforce responded to the call and pulled the vehicle over in the Magma Ranch School parking lot at 10980 E Desert Mountain Blvd.

The driver was identified as Delfina Gaitan, 35 of Florence. The deputy noticed Gaitan’s eyes were bloodshot and watery, and her speech was slurred. Even more surprising was the  9-year-old girl in the back seat sleeping without a seat belt who Gaitan identified as her daughter.

Gaitan admitted to drinking (5) Bud Light beers prior to driving and rated herself a 4 on a 1-10 scale of intoxication. After failing a series of field sobriety test, Gaitan submitted to a preliminary breath test which determined her alcohol concentration to be .235 – almost three times the legal limit. She was placed under arrest for (3) counts of Aggravated DUI with a passenger under the age of 15 (ARS-138A3).

A deputy gave Gaitan’s daughter a ride home where she and her mother live with a roommate.
