Wednesday, September 21, 2011 -
The DPS family is saddened to learn of the death of Pilot Matthew Uhl. Uhl was in a DPS owned Chevrolet Lumina traveling northbound on U.S. 93 about 12 miles north of Wickenburg at 8:41p.m. last night when his vehicle was struck head-on by a 1995 Ford Explorer that was moving at a high rate of speed and may have been attempting to pass other vehicles. Uhl, who was a civilian rotary pilot, was deceased on scene.

The driver of the SUV and his passenger were also pronounced deceased on-scene. There were no signs of impairment in either driver.

Uhl has been a DPS Pilot since 2006. He operated the Bell 407 Ranger Air Rescue and was assigned to the DPS Central Air Rescue Unit in Phoenix. At the time of his death, Matt Uhl was enroute to cover a shift in Kingman as part of the DPS Western Air Rescue.

On February 20, 2010, Matt and DPS Officer/Paramedic Eric Tarr made news when they rescued 3-year-old Victoria Bensch who had been missing for nearly 15 hours after she wandered away from her Cordes Lakes home.

“Matt was a true professional. He always had a great attitude and was just the kind of employee you’d want to have. Matt was an exemplary pilot and a terrific guy. This is a painful loss for all of us at DPS,” said Sergeant Martyn Fink of the DPS Aviation Unit.
Uhl is survived by his wife and three children.
