ADOT Memorial Day Weekend Travel Advisory

Existing Highway Work Zones Can Effect Holiday Travel

PHOENIX — Whether it’s a trip to the high country, west coast beaches or another destination, drivers should keep existing highway work zones in mind when making their Memorial Day weekend travel plans (May 27-30), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Even when major highway improvement projects shut down to give drivers a break from closures, ADOT points out there are existing work zones with lane restrictions that will affect traffic during the busiest travel hours at the start and end of the three-day holiday weekend.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and to consider traveling during non-peak hours – especially earlier in the day before traffic builds up.

Among the work zone locations that drivers should watch for:

  • California Travel: Interstate 10 at the Hassayampa River bridges, 40 miles west of downtown Phoenix. I-10 is narrowed to one lane in both directions for bridge improvements (mileposts 103-105). Delays of up to 90 minutes possible during busiest holiday travel times. Please allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes, including US 60 through Wickenburg or Interstate 8 (via state routes 85 and 95).

  • Flagstaff Travel: Interstate 17 at Munds Park, 20 miles south of Flagstaff. I-17 is narrowed to one lane in both directions for bridge improvements (milepost 322). Northbound traffic is temporarily switched to southbound side of highway within work zone. For safety’s sake, drivers should obey lower speed limit, merge safely and allow extra travel time during busiest holiday travel times.

  • Las Vegas Travel: US 93 north of Wikieup has an existing work zone for a widening project. No passing allowed along seven-mile stretch (mileposts 109-116). Please be patient, allow extra travel time and obey reduced speed limit.

  • Phoenix - Tucson Travel: Interstate 10 in the Casa Grande and Eloy area has existing work zones between state routes 87 and 387 with limited shoulders for projects to add new lanes in each direction. Please use caution and obey reduced speed limit.

  • Rim Country Travel: State Route 260 has established work zones east of Payson for widening projects (Little Green Valley mileposts 262-267 and Doubtful Canyon mileposts 269-272). Please be prepared for slower traffic at times.

  • Albuquerque Travel: Interstate 40 reduced to one lane in both directions at State Route 77 junction (Keams Canyon interchange, milepost 293) for bridge improvements. Please allow extra time during busiest holiday weekend travel periods.

Before heading out on the road, drivers are encouraged to call 5-1-1 or log on to ADOT’s Traveler Information site at www.az511.gov to check on updated highway conditions around the state.
