Cell phone with GPS aids in Ohio man's rescue

Lost Man Uses Cell Phone with GPS
To Help Rescuers Locate Him

Flagstaff AZ- An Ohio man who was hiking by himself determined his GPS coordinates with his cell phone and ultimately assisted in his own rescue.  On May 7, 2011 at about Dispatchers of the Northern Arizona Regional 911 Reception Center received a call from a woman who was in Ohio to report that her husband was hiking on the San Francisco Peaks and became disoriented and lost.  According to the caller her husband obtained the GPS coordinates from his cell phone and emailed them to her.  A Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputy who serves as a coordinator deployed eight Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Volunteers to the area where the lost man was believed to be. 

At about Coconino County Search and Rescue Volunteers located the lost man.  The victim was cold and disoriented however he was not injured nor did he require medical attention.  Rescuers assisted the victim in regaining an appropriate body temperature and escorted him to safety.
