Update on the shootings in Yuma

Nature of Incident –  Multiple Shooting
Location of Incident – Yuma County
On Thursday, June 02, 2011, The Yuma Police Department and Yuma County Sheriff's Office began to investigate multiple shootings within Yuma County.
There was one shooting in the City of Yuma in the 300 block of South 2nd Avenue.
That investigation revealed an elderly male suspect entered a business and shot and killed Jerrold Shelley. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.
The Yuma County Sheriff's Office reported they were investigating five shootings in Yuma County. There were five people killed and an additional victim flown to a Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix.
As the investigation continued, the shootings within Yuma County and City appeared to be linked. The suspect was identified as Carey Hal Dyess, 73 years old of Yuma.
At about 11:00 am, Yuma County Sheriff Deputies located Dyess, deceased, in the area of Blaisdale and Highway 95, with what appears to be a have been a self-inflicted gun shot wound. This continues to be a joint investigation between the Yuma Police Department and the Yuma County Sheriff's Office.

The initial investigation indicates Carey Dyess targeted his ex-wife and her friends that were supportive of her in their divorce from 2008.

This case remains under investigation and anyone with any information is encouraged to call the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office at 783-4427 or the City of Yuma Police Department at 783-4421.
