Legend has it that the Liberty Bell rang out from Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776 si9naling to the world that America had declared its independence. The story so captured the imagination of the citizens that a legend was born. In fact, historians tell us that the steeple was in disrepair and it's very doubtful that the bell actually rang in 1776.
The Liberty Bell Center was opened in 2003 and every 4th of July at 2 p.m. eastern time descendant children of the signers of the Declaration of Independence tap the bell 13 times, representing the 13 original states.
