Noon update on Picket Fire in Tonto National Forest

1,200 acres of grassland and Sonoran Desert terrain scorched near Superior

By noon Monday, May 9, the Picket Fire in the Tonto National Forest off Highway 60 near Superior, Arizona, had burned 1,200 acres of grassland and Sonoran Desert terrain. The cost of the blaze that started Sunday, May 8 near Boyce Arboretum has been estimated at $150,000.


Mop-up was scheduled to begin Monday and the fire was expected to have a minimum spread to the southwest. One Type 3 helicopter, five engines, two Type 2 crews which included 82 personnel remained to manage the blaze.
An investigation continues into the origin of the fire that started Sunday afternoon, May 8.
