North and southbound lanes of 1-17 closed - traffic backed up
Friday, August 12, 6:06 p.m. - The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported the closure of I-17 at mile post 247 (North of Black Canyon City). Northbound lanes are blocked by a commercial vehicle on fire and are closed at this time. Currently the contents of the vehicle is being reported as hay, no HAZMAT. The fire has also started brush fires in the immediate area.
DPS is asking the public to avoid the area and to plan on lengthy delays. Currently there is no ETA for the roadway to be opened.

Editors note: According to a television news report after this press release was sent at 6:06 p.m. Friday, August 12, both north and southbound lanes were closed due to the fire spreading across the median. Officials are suggesting that drivers heading north from the Valley take State Route 87 to avoid the traffic backup.
