Flagstaff, Arizona - During the time frame beginning on Friday, September 2 through Monday September 6, Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated 68 incidents and completed corresponding written reports.  They conducted 147 traffic stops, issued 22 citations and arrested three impaired drivers.  They stopped 38 Off Road Vehicle operators and issued 6 citations.  Deputies investigated seven traffic collisions resulting in injuries five of which involved Off Road Vehicles.  Deputies assigned to the Page Patrol Division conducted numerous area patrols on Lake Powell .

In addition to the uniformed deputies, the members of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit stayed busy.

On Saturday, September 3, at about 7 p.m. the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Sedona Fire District regarding an injured 45 year old male hiker at the Encinoso Picnic area in Oak Creek Canyon .  Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit members responded to assist the Sedona Fire District.  Search and rescue members located the injured victim at about 9:30 p.m. Responders learned he was hiking when a rock fall from people hiking above struck him in the head and arm.  Sedona Fire Medical Personnel evaluated him and determined he was able to walk with assistance.  Although he sustained injuries associated with being struck by the rocks he declined further medical treatment.

On Sunday, September 3, at about 8 p.m.,  the sheriff’s office received a cell phone call from two hikers who were on the Weatherford Trail of the San Francisco Peaks .  According to the caller they were hiking and accidently left the trail becoming disoriented and were not able to find their way back to the trail. A Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Coordinator directed them back to the trail via their cell phone and they were able to safely hike down the mountain.

While the Search and Rescue Coordinator was attempting to locate the above two lost hikers, he was parked at the trail head sounding his audible siren to attract them. Three other lost hikers who had not previously been reported walked to the Deputy’s location and were escorted back to the highway.
