Statement by Governor Jan Brewer
“September 11, 2001, will forever be etched into America’s memory. Not merely for the evil that claimed the lives of thousands of our friends, family members and neighbors, but, more importantly, for the good that resulted as Americans joined together as a nation to mourn for those who were lost. Out of the ashes arose hope and renewal.
“Ten years have passed since that fateful morning, and for many the wounds are not yet healed. The attacks of 9/11 brought anger, fear and confusion. But out of tragedy came triumph as patriotism was awakened and Americans looking for answers and support turned to God and each other.
“Amid our country’s mourning, anger and horror came perhaps the most significant response of all – unity. The terrorists’ attempt to debilitate our nation actually strengthened the bond between our citizens.
“Sunday is about paying tribute to the victims of 9/11, as well as the troops that risk their lives daily to protect our freedom and preserve our safety. I ask that you take this opportunity to join me in praying for those who lost their lives on the planes and inside the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Special commemoration is due for the firefighters, police and other first responders who lost their lives charging into danger that day, and the passengers of Flight 93 who struck the first blow in our nation’s War on Terror.
“With the tenth anniversary of 9/11 upon us, let us honor the souls that were lost and the lives that were forever changed. The United States of America – the world – will never be the same. But the American way – courage, resilience, selflessness – will always prevail.”
