Half Staff Notice today to honor SFC Johnathan B. McCain

Governor Jan Brewer has ordered that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on November 15 in honor of Army Sergeant First Class (SFC) Johnathan B. McCain of Apache Junction, Arizona

SFC McCain died November 13, 2011 in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  He died of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle.   He was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

The Governor has ordered that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the day of SFC McCain's interment. In a statement to the press, Brewer said, “I am saddened to report that another one of Arizona’s Finest has been lost.

“Sgt. 1st Class McCain was serving overseas in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Like all of our brave servicemen and women, he risked his life for the cause of freedom and gave of himself for our nation’s greater good. We owe him our gratitude.

“Please keep the McCain family in your prayers. For them, these are the most trying of times. Also, remember Sgt. 1st Class McCain and our other men and women in uniform. In the famous words of the late newspaperman and radio correspondent Elmer Davis, ‘This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.’

“I have ordered that all state flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset today, November 15, in honor of Sgt. 1st Class Johnathan McCain.”

Funeral arrangements are still pending.

Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to join in this tribute.
