I-10 closed in Chandler due to tanker collision, danger of explosion

Evacuations around crash site, I-10 closed north of Pecos exit until at least 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9

Arizona Department of Public Safety (ADOT)- This is a tanker dairy truck that rear ended another tanker truck carrying a diesel gas byproduct. This collision occurred westbound I-10 at Chandler Blvd. Both eastbound and westbound I-10 are closed. We have one fatality which will be the driver of the milk truck. We believe this closure to last for several hours.

Interstate 10 has been closed in both eastbound and westbound lanes at U.S. 60 to Wild Horse Pass Road due to the collision of two tanker trucks, a milk truck and a gas tanker,  in the middle of the morning commute at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. The driver of the milk truck is reported to have been killed in the accident when he rear-ended the gas truck, carrying an estimated 3,000 gallons of fuel. The driver reportedly escaped from the cab of the milk tanker, but was on fire and died on the freeway.  The driver of the gas tanker escaped injury and was talking to investigators about the incident. The gas tanker remained on fire for about an hour as toxic black smoke billowed from flames estimated to be 60 feet high. There were no water hydrants in the area and fire fighters had only a small amount of water that they carry on their trucks. A nearby hotel supplied water that firefighters mixed with foam to put out the blaze. Police went door-to-door to businesses to evacuate the area and that evacuation has now been lifted.  The public is warned to avoid Chandler Blvd. near the interstate due to the cleanup and on-going investigation.  The closure is expected to be in effect until at least 3 p.m. today from milepost 154.9 to milepost 162.50. The Payson Daily Bugle will provide updates throughout the day as more information is forthcoming. Click on the link below to see raw video of the incident from KPHO.
