Coconino County Inmate Attempts Escape
Flagstaff, AZ – On November 6, 2011 an inmate at the Coconino County Detention Facility attempted to escape from custody.
On November 6, 2011 inmate Curtis Ray SMITH informed a Sergeant in the Detention Facility that he had seen an inmate walking around unescorted in the Detention Facility’s Medical Unit. The Sergeant began an investigation that revealed that SMITH was the inmate walking around unescorted. Evidence of him leaving his cell was captured on video recordings. SMITH attempted to enter the false ceiling area above the medical unit. SMITH was unsuccessful at leaving the facility and remains in custody. This incident is under investigation by detectives of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.
A charge of Attempted Escape, 2nd degree has been filed on Smith. SMITH was in the facility under charges of Aggravated Assault, Armed Robbery, Criminal Damage and Possession of Prescription Drugs stemming from an incident on November 2, 2011 at the Meteor Crater Rest Stop.
