"Floating Islands" a danger to boaters on Saguaro Lake

Masses of vegetation at Saguaro Lake can be hazardous to speeding watercraft

Mesa, Ariz. (Feb. 22, 2011) Floating masses of vegetation at Saguaro Lake have been recently observed.  These masses of vegetation can vary in size, but the largest ones can be very hazardous if they are hit at speed with a watercraft.

“They are visible during daylight because the vegetation is above the water, but are very hard to distinguish in low light,” warned Jason Scow, district spokesperson.  “Please be alert and take the necessary precautions to avoid these ‘floating islands’ of vegetation.”

For more information, please call the Mesa Ranger District office at 480-610-3300.
