USS Arizona and USS Missouri gun barrels to arrive in Phoenix Friday, April 20


The above contributed photo is the USS Arizona Battleship “Rifle” Gun Barrel that was shipped via flatbed truck from the U.S. Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, Virginia on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, twenty-two miles to the flatbed railcar for shipment to Arizona.

Secretary of State Ken Bennett will host ceremony for WWII gun barrels that will be part of memorial at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza.

A special ceremony heralding the arrival of the historic gun barrels from the USS Arizona and USS Missouri hosted by Secretary of State Ken Bennett will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 20 at the Executive Office Tower Parking Lot at 19th Ave. and W. Washington in Phoenix.
Joining Secretary Bennett will be legislators, state and local officials, representatives from BNSF Railway, Director Joey Strickland of Arizona Department of Veterans' Services, Phoenix Rotary 100 President Jon Bauman and community partners who have been instrumental in the first phase of the project to transport the artifacts from the east coast to Arizona by BNSF railway.
The train carrying the gun barrels will have its engine and railcars decorated with US and Arizona State flags. It should arrive between W. Washington and W. Jefferson at 10:15 a.m. and will serve as a backdrop for the ceremony in the parking lot on the east side of 19th Street, adjacent to the rail line.
The ceremony includes recognition of WWII veterans who served on the USS Missouri and the USS Arizona.
