Flags at half staff around state in honor of fallen peace officers

Statement by Governor Jan Brewer
Flags at Half-Staff in Honor of Fallen Peace Officers, MCSO Deputy Wargo

“Today, as we commemorate Arizona Peace Officers Memorial Day, I ask that you join me in offering a special prayer for slain Maricopa County Deputy Sheriff David Wargo.

“Deputy Wargo, 39, passed away early last week as a result of severe head trauma he received in the line of duty in May 2003. Deputy Wargo was attempting to detain a fleeing suspect in a supermarket parking lot when he was dragged by the suspect’s vehicle, causing him irreparable head injury. Due to his extensive injuries, Deputy Wargo continued to receive close medical care until his passing on May 1, 2012.

“This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers our courageous law enforcement officers encounter on a daily basis. They deserve our respect and our eternal gratitude.

“Though our hearts are heavy today, we can take comfort in the fact that Deputy Wargo has found peace after a nearly decade-long struggle. Please continue sending your prayers for Deputy Wargo and his friends and family, and keep in mind all of Arizona’s finest, who risk their lives daily to defend our safety.

“In recognition of the 39th Annual Arizona Peace Officers Memorial Day, I have ordered that all State flags be flown at half-staff until sunset today, May 7, 2012. I have also ordered that flags be lowered tomorrow, May 8, 2012, in honor of MCSO Deputy David Wargo.”
