Statement by Governor Jan Brewer
Mourning the Death of a former Arizona Adjutant General
“This
is a sad day for Arizona, as we mourn the passing of Maj. Gen. Don L.
Owens. Maj. Gen. Owens served our State and Nation for 45 years,
including a decade of honorable service as Arizona’s Adjutant General
and Director of the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military
Affairs. He will be remembered as a hero in every sense of the word.
“A native of Phoenix, Maj. Gen. Owens joined the Arizona Air National
Guard as a private in 1952. During his career, he served as Commanding
General of the Arizona Air National Guard and Commander of the 161st
Air Refueling Group, among other positions. He was named Adjutant
General in 1983, and faithfully served in this role until his retirement
in 1994. Maj. Gen. Owens was inducted into the Arizona Aviation Hall of
Fame in 2010.
“For his committed service to the State of Arizona and to the United
States of America, we are eternally indebted to Maj. Gen. Owens. Please
join me in offering a prayer for his family, friends and fellow
servicemen and women, each of whom deserves our gratitude and respect.
“In tribute to Maj. Gen. Don L. Owens, I order that flags be lowered to
half-staff on the date of his interment, which is pending.”
A good and faithful servant, may God rest his soul.
