DPS Update on three dust-storm related crashes on I-10

Eastbound lanes on I-10 near Picacho Peak re-opened at 5:48 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4
 Arizona DPS Press Release:
At the original crash site in the westbound lanes of I-10 we had a total of 16 vehicles both commercial and passenger that were involved in a chain reaction crash that occurred at 12:15pm. A massive dust storm rolled through the area cutting visability to near zero. We have one confirmed fatality, a male in his 70's. He was a passenger in private vehicle driven by his wife who was critically injured. There's one other person was taken to a tucson hospital with life threatening injuries. There were numerous other people treated for non life threatening injuries at Tucson area hospitals.

At 1:44pm an 8 vehicle chain reaction crash occurred on Interstate 10 near McCartney Road eastbound (near Casa Grande) This also involved a dust storm and a combination of commercial and private vehicles. There were multiple injuries but non life threatening.

At 3:49pm on the westbound lanes of I-10 at milepost 175 (near Chandler), there was another collision involving two semi tractor trailer rigs and a small passenger car. Two people in the passenger vehicle were seriously injured. The lingering dust storm in the area also played a factor in this crash.

It's important to note that first responders including DPS Officers had to contend with blowing dust and low visability for hours during the rescue operation. The weather system that brought this dust storm literally parked itself over Interstate 10 for hours
