Commercial and passenger vehicles involved, a number of life threatening injuries reported, one fatality
Wednesday, Oct. 5 - Updated Arizona Department of Public Safety press release identifies fatality as Austin, Texas man.
At about 12:15pm today a strong dust storm moved through the area of Interstate 10 at Picacho Peak about 40 miles north of Tucson. There was minimal visability at the time. We have two chain reaction crashes in the westbound lanes. All involve commercial vehicles and passenger cars. There is one confirmed fatality and two additional victims with life threatening injuries.
The fatality from the chain reaction crash on I-10 westbound at Picacho Peak has been identified as William Joseph Tatsch, 66, of Austin Texas. Tatsch was a front seat passenger in a Honda sedan driven by his wife, Paula Fry Tatsch, 65, also of Austin, TX.
The Honda sedan collided with a large freight truck in the westbound #2 lane of I-10 and traveled under the rear of the commercial vehicle after impact.
There are a total of 16 vehicles involved in these crashes at the Picacho Peak location. We closed the eastbound lanes to allow emergency responders access to the scene. Due to the poor visability, all patients were transported by ground ambulance to Tucson area hospitals. The dust continues to cause a major hinderance to DPS Officers and other rescue personnel.
At 1:44 p.m., DPS officers responded to another chain reaction dust storm related crash on the eastbound lanes of I-10 at McCartney Road 20 miles north of Tucson. Eight vehicles are involved in that crash with two critically injured patients.
We have 25 vehicles involved in total from all I-10 crashes today. We have no estimate for reopening I-10 in either direction. We recommend SR 79 as an alternate.
